The Best Beer to Bring to Beer League, by Sport

The best beer to bring to beer league is one your teammates actually want, in a package the postgame venue allows, with equally good options for people who don't drink. Beyond that, we have opinions. A lot of them. Unlike our shooting percentages, these are entirely subjective.

Here are our picks for eight sports, each with a budget alternative and a nonalcoholic option. This is a U.S.-focused shopping shortlist for adults of legal drinking age, for after play is finished and where alcohol is permitted. Bring water separately, respect anyone opting out, and arrange a sober ride. Nobody has to drink to belong on the team.

How we chose the cooler lineup

Beer League publishes this guide. These are editorial pairings based on the brewers' descriptions and the kind of postgame gathering we'd plan, not results from a taste test. Product pages were checked October 27, 2026; links go to official brand sources. Local prices, package sizes, stock, and distribution vary. Check the actual label and local availability before buying.

We deliberately repeat a few picks. A team cooler does not need a scouting department. Our budget candidates are Miller High Life, which the brewer describes as a crisp American lager, and Pabst Blue Ribbon Original, another lager. Treat “budget” as a shortlist to price-check, not a promise that either is cheapest: compare the same can size and total checkout cost with your main pick. If the alternative costs more locally, it loses its starting spot.

For the NA choices, Athletic Upside Dawn is a golden-style brew described as light-bodied with citrus and herbal notes. Athletic Run Wild is an IPA with hop bitterness balanced by malt, with citrus and pine notes listed by the brewer. Both are sold as nonalcoholic, with less than 0.5% alcohol by volume; that does not mean 0.0%. Keep sparkling water or another preferred soft drink available for anyone avoiding beer altogether.

Hockey: Labatt Blue

Main pick: Labatt Blue. The brewer describes this pilsner as lightly fruity, with a hop aroma and a slightly sweet finish. We'd choose it for a simple postgame gathering where the conversation is already occupied by the goal someone almost scored.

Budget alternative: Miller High Life, if the local price comparison wins. NA pick: Athletic Upside Dawn for a lighter golden-style option. Confirm where the gathering is happening before packing anything; the rink's rules decide what belongs in the building, not the assistant captain's interpretation of tradition.

Softball: Miller High Life

Main pick: Miller High Life. This is our uncomplicated lager choice for the backyard hang after the equipment is packed away. The brewer's crisp flavor description fits a cooler that doesn't require everyone to complete a tasting questionnaire.

Budget alternative: Pabst Blue Ribbon Original, only if it is cheaper for the package you need. High Life may already be the better-value buy. NA pick: Athletic Upside Dawn. Pick packaging the host allows and assign one person to ice duty. “I thought there'd be ice” remains undefeated in the excuses division.

Soccer: Guinness Draught

Main pick: Guinness Draught. Guinness describes roasted coffee and chocolate aromas with bitter, sweet, and roasted flavors. We'd pick it for a seated postgame meal when the team wants something different from a pale lager. The brewer has a can-pouring guide, so this is a better fit when you have suitable cups or glasses and somewhere to sit.

Budget alternative: Pabst Blue Ribbon Original; it changes the flavor direction to lager, rather than imitating stout. NA pick: Athletic Run Wild for teammates who prefer a hoppy option. Nobody needs to explain the offside call again while the rest of the table is ordering food. They will, but they don't need to.

Basketball: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Main pick: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The brewery describes pine and citrus aromas balanced by caramel malt. We'd bring it when the group's beer fans want hops in the postgame lineup, not assume it is everyone's default.

Budget alternative: Miller High Life for a lager option with a different flavor profile. NA pick: Athletic Run Wild. Ask about preferences before committing the whole cooler to hops. Your teammate can enjoy a different beer without the selection committee reviewing their jump shot.

Volleyball: Blue Moon Belgian White

Main pick: Blue Moon Belgian White. The brewer lists Valencia orange peel and coriander, and describes a citrus aroma with subtle sweetness. We'd choose this wheat ale for a postgame picnic-style meal with a group that likes that flavor direction.

Budget alternative: Miller High Life. NA pick: Athletic Upside Dawn, a golden-style choice rather than an exact wheat-beer substitute. Blue Moon suggests an orange garnish, but you can leave the elaborate serving setup to someone who didn't already carry the net. Check the gathering location's container rules, especially if you're coming from a beach or park.

Pickleball: Modelo Especial

Main pick: Modelo Especial. Modelo identifies it as a Pilsner-style Mexican lager with a full flavor and crisp taste. We'd choose it for a straightforward postgame food stop or a host-approved cooler, without making the selection more complicated than scoring doubles.

Budget alternative: Pabst Blue Ribbon Original. NA pick: Athletic Upside Dawn. Agree on the gathering place before anyone shops; a public court reservation is not permission for a courtside bar. If the group prefers soft drinks, that is the winning lineup. There is no beverage rating system to climb.

Kickball: Blue Moon Belgian White

Main pick: Blue Moon Belgian White gets a second appearance for a group that wants citrus-led wheat beer with postgame snacks. This is a taste preference, not a claim that kickball has an official beer. The sport already asks us to take a large rubber ball seriously; one governing body is enough.

Budget alternative: Miller High Life. NA pick: Athletic Upside Dawn. If the team has mixed preferences, buy less of the main pick and leave room for the alternatives. A cooler full of one person's favorite is technically teamwork, but only if that person is the whole team.

Flag football: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Main pick: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale returns for a postgame hang with hop fans. The pine-and-citrus profile is the reason for the choice; it makes no claim about recovery, hydration, or your ability to remember the route.

Budget alternative: Pabst Blue Ribbon Original. NA pick: Athletic Run Wild. Keep the shopping assignment separate from the equipment assignment, and confirm both. The cooler arriving on time does not make up for leaving the flags at home.

A cooler checklist you can actually use

  • Permission: confirm the host, league and venue rules, plus where the postgame gathering will take place. If alcohol is not allowed, make it an alcohol-free hang.
  • Preferences: ask who wants regular beer, NA beer, or a soft drink. Don't assume the team name answers for everyone.
  • Shopping: choose one main pick and the alternatives people requested. Check local stock, labels, packaging restrictions and the total budget.
  • Practical stuff: assign the cooler, ice, water, any permitted cups, and cleanup. Keep NA choices identifiable; no mystery-can guessing game.
  • Getting home: settle the sober transportation plan before the gathering.

Copy this into the team chat:

Postgame hang: [place], after [game], with [host/venue permission confirmed]. I'm bringing [main pick] plus [NA/soft-drink options]. Tell me your preference by [time]; no explanation needed. [Name] has ice and water, [name] handles cleanup. Budget: [amount and who covers it]. Transport plan: [details]. No pressure to drink or stay.

Put the owner beside each job using our captain's game-day checklist. For the rest of the team culture, our beer-league etiquette guide covers showing up as a good teammate. Choosing drinks should be the easy part of the evening.
